Chuck Norris vs. Communism

Release Date
12th of November 2015
Director: Ilinca Calugareanu

During the 1980s the communist Romanian dictator Ceausescu tried to foreclose his country of all Western influences. On television, he and his regime were feted, foreign films were censored rigorously. But US pop culture broke it’s way into the country anyway, by illegal means as pirate copies – favoured by the spread of VHS recorders. Chuck Norris, Bruce Lee and Arnold Schwarzenegger soon became well known by the Romanian audience  – and they all had the voice of Irina Nistor who dubbed a lot of movies sold on the black market. Nistors strong, high voice became a symbol of freedom. In the documentary director Ilinca Calugareanu follows the history of video cassettes and portraits the people that got a hold on them – and so took refuge in the world of film from the gray, dictatorship-loaded reality …

Voice-Over artists: Peter Becker, Marc Rissmann u.a.
